Ice Bucket Challenge To The Extreme!

September 17th, 2014

Due to the latest craze of the “Ice Bucket Challenge” and now that summer is coming to a quick close our months blog is based upon the thrill seeking extreme winter sport of ice diving, now ice diving isn’t like diving in the luxurious warm seas of the caribbean its a lot more chilly to say the least!

Why don’t you plunge yourself into the depths of the freezing ice cold white sea off the coast of Russia, its the only sea in Europe that freezes over during the winter months, if you can bare the freezing cold temperatures of the white sea, you will endure the most beautiful underwater experience ever. The underwater world of soft corals, starfishes, sea-urchins, sea anemones, crabs, myriads of colourful fish darting around, rocks and even abandoned shipwrecks to explore! As well as visibility between 30 and 50 meters, the white sea is the ice diving destination of choice for many thrill seekers.

As the name suggests ice diving takes place under ice, typically with a single entry/exit point, ice diving is considered to be an advanced type of diving that requires special training, it does not necessarily mean that it is a high risk activity, with the right safety precautions ice diving is as safe as any other form of scuba diving.

If you fancy trying the thrill seeking extreme sport of ice diving why don’t you contact us for an insurance quote as one of the UK’s leading insures or extreme sports- 0800 1313 417.

A Flying Camera for Extreme Sports Fans

August 19th, 2014

Entrepreneurial Latvian sports enthusiasts, Janis Spogis and Edgars Rozentals were fed up of hearing from friends that there was no drone on the market which could both fly itself and film their stunts. So, as well as inventing one, they set up a company, “Helico”, which sells drones equipped with small cameras to be used in the extreme sports industry and businesses use them to film or monitor operations from above.

But, as keen fans of extreme sports, they particularly enjoy getting involved in anything which involved an element of speed, stunts and danger!

They’ve named their product,” Airdog”, a small foldable drone, with four propellers, weighing about 1.6kg (3.5lb). It can be fitted with a small camera, which rests on a pivoted support, to ensure that the footage is filmed smoothly. Its maximum speed is about 70km/h (43mph).

With the help of a GPS sensor, about the size of a large watch, attached to an arm or helmet, the drone then automatically points the camera at the user, and follows at a pre-set distance.

Janis claims that “Nobody has done anything like this in the world,” he claims. “Helico” is on track to start production in October, and before Christmas the first models will be shipped out to the hundreds of thousands of customers who have already made an order.

Heavy Metal at the Commonwealth Games

July 30th, 2014

This year’s Summer sports calendar has been jam packed with high-level international sporting events, from Wimbledon, Lords and The Football World Cup to Formula 1 and The Tour de France! Not only do these competitions make for compelling viewing but they get the patriotic spirits soaring as nations rally together.

How exciting then that after such a high-profile sporting agenda, that the final, international sporting competition to be held this Summer, will be held in Glasgow with the 20th Commonwealth games.

Amongst the 17 sports taking place, weightlifting is possibly the most underrated extreme activities of the competition where athletes compete in 15 bodyweight categories. Heavier athletes can look more imposing because the amount of discs on the barbell and bar, made of steel, is actually bending, but the athletes in the lighter categories are lifting a comparative amount to their bodyweight so it’s just as impressive.

England, India, Canada, Australia and Nigeria are famed for their performances in weightlifting but there are some outsiders which will make for interesting viewing…
…. Take a look at the official website for everything you need to know and for live footage of the weightlifting you can also keep an eye here:

Weightlifting, at any bodyweight can be insured so get in contact with Ansell’s if the games get you inspired!
