Cliff Jumping..

September 18th, 2014

This really is something for the fearless.. Cliff jumping or also known as jumping platform has taken the world by storm, from young kids jumping from wardrobes onto beds to grown men launching themselves 85 foot into quarries and expecting the unknown.

The platform is usually a simple clearing into bushes and other vegetation along the cliff or above a river, ocean, lake or quarry. the distances tend to be approximately 30 meters, (100 foot) above the water.. the main technique to cliff jumping involves not only having the guts to launch yourself into the air but the landing in a defined pencil shape, typically with hands at the side or above the head.

However bad angle of entry can cause injury e.g broken bones or re-arrangement of internal limbs,  but don’t panic we will still insure you!!

As an officially recognised competitive sport, dating back to the early 1700’s when the then-king of Maui, King Kahekili jumped from a 63-foot cliff into the water below without causing even the slightest splash. Centuries later, in 1968, the International Cliff Diving Championship was featured on the ABC network’s “Wide World of Sports” broadcast. In 1996, the World High Diving Federation took ownership of the sport and created organised cliff diving competitions that burgeoned into worldwide recognition and appeal of the activity.

Acapulco, mexico is a hot spot and is home to the La Quebreda cliff divers, a team who performs for audiences throughout the year and have been since 1934.. now this is something i would want to see!

so if you think you could be brave enough to try the extreme sport of cliff jumping why don’t you take out an insurance quote with us first!..  just to be on the safe side.

Octopush (Underwater hockey)

September 17th, 2014

YES.. i am thinking the same as you, what is octopush? Well today i discovered what the extreme sport of octopush is (basically a fancy name for underwater hockey) and i can say it looks rather fun, but very energetic and a lot of work.

octopush-header

octopush originated in the England in 1954 by Alan Blake, Blake invented the game as a means of keeping the clubs members in his local community active over the cold months when open-water diving lost its appeal.

The game consists of 8 team members hence the “octo” in which players wear a diving mask, snorkel, fins and carry a short tiny shuffle stick in one (either) hand for playing the puck, hence the “push”  the game is two halves, typically 10-15 minutes long. often the players who are most successful in this game are strong swimmers who have great ability to hold and recover their breath and are able to produce great speed underwater whilst demonstrating learned skills in puck control. it combines the skills of hockey and the speed and strength of swimming.

The first underwater hockey championships washeld in canada in 1980, at the moment ocotpush isn’t an olympic sport but i am sure by the year 3000 everything will have changed and they’ll soon live underwater.
