There’s a Quidditch World Cup, who knew?

We all know that the Americans are a little different when it comes to sport. ‘The World Series’ in baseball, participated by only North-American teams. American ‘Football’, where hands are predominantly used to run about with with the ball. And, erm, lacrosse.

However, things may just have got a little bit stranger. The real life version of the physically impossible game of Quidditch, made famous by the Harry Potter books, was born out of a dormitory in Vermont, USA. Yes, the game with the broomstick flying things.

In fact, the 6th Quidditch World Cup was played this month, with The University of Texas running out winners. It’s fair to say that these guys and girls were taking this very seriously and it was stated that 80 teams from across the globe competed for the title. Make of it what you will!

We finally beat the Germans at a sport

What sport is that, you ask?

Marbles, I answer.

That’s right, we’re stooping to marbles to pinch a gloat about beating our fiercest continental rivals. Let’s face it, it’s going to be a long while before we celebrate victory against them on the football pitch again.

The World Marble Championships were held at The Greyhound pub in Tinsley Green, Sussex, seeing the Black Dog team take the title by beating off competition from their German rivals and holders of the cup, 1st MC Erzgebirge. The victory for the British team captured their 13th World Championship win.

The international tournament has a rich history and it is thought that the venue for the marbles has been used since the 16th century, bringing spectators and competitors from across the world to The Greyhound carpark.

Well done to the British victors, the Black Dog!

XXX Chilli Burger or the Saltdean Sizzler?

There must be some sort of macho chilli loving fetish happening down on the Sussex coast, as restaurantors in Hove and Saltdean challenge the public to test their resolve against two of the hottest dishes ‘in the world’.

The Saltdean Sizzler

Featured in the national newspapers today is Paul Brayshaw, who has created the ‘Saltdean Sizzler’ at his pizza house near Brighton. It consists of everything you would expect from a pizza, a tomato base, herbs and mozzarella but the fire comes from the inclusion of the infamous ghost chilli as on one of its toppings.

The pizza weighs in at a wopping 3.2 million on the Scoville scale; that is one extreme meal.

It has been said that some challengers have given up on completing the pizza after just one bite, confessing to it being just too hot!

XXX Chilli Burger

This article about Paul’s pizza reminded me of a similar extreme food that I encountered in the past, a food challenge so hot that you have to be over the age of 18 and sign a disclaimer promising not to sue the establishment, before you can eat it.

This scary sounding bite is the XXX Chilli Burger that can be found in the Burger Off restaurant in Hove. I personally know of two people who were not seen in public for a whole 24 hours after being made bedridden by this scorching, meaty ball of hell. Their stories talked of stomach cramps and uncontrollable sweats, as well as the unmentionables.

The burger consists of a secret sauce that is lathered onto the burger before it is consumed, containing a myriad of different eye-watering chillis.

Both are extreme food challenges, but which one would you choose to take on?
