Congratulations to Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka who won his first Grand Slam title with victory over an injury-hit Rafael Nadal in the Australian Open final. Winning three of the four sets 6-3 6-2 3-6 6-3, the 28-year-old is only the second Swiss man to win a Grand Slam singles title after 17-time champion Roger Federer. An unexpected win and clearly a player we will be keeping a close eye on this year and particularly at this year’s Wimbledon.
As for the Brits’ men’s players on court, the Open has left Murray, who is still recovering from a back operation, drop ranking to the world’s number six after losing to Federer in the quarter finals. Federer himself now drops to eighth place.
