England become 2016 Six Nations champions

March 13th, 2016

England have been crowned Six Nations champions with a week to spare, thanks to Scotland beating France at Murrayfield. And that result means Wales will be guaranteed a second-place finish if they defeat Italy at the Principality Stadium on Saturday. France had to triumph in Edinburgh to keep the title race going to the final day, with England visiting Paris next weekend. But the Scots came out on top 29-18 with tries from Stuart Hogg, Duncan Taylor and Tim Visser seeing them secure an impressive victory.

England make history by becoming the first team to claim the Six Nations title with a week to spare. Having won their first four matches, including Saturday’s triumph over Wales, they will head for Paris looking to complete the Grand Slam. Wales, who lost 25-21 at Twickenham, are second in the table and will finish in that position should they beat struggling Italy in Cardiff.

Giving his reaction, England coach Eddie Jones said: “It’s nice to win the championship, but as a team we’ve not achieved what we want to achieve yet, which is the Grand Slam.“We will go to Paris confident. If we prepare well we will do the business. “The real credit goes to the players. Chris Robshaw has been absolutely outstanding. To go from where he was at the end of the World Cup to where he is today is a fantastic achievement. He has been colossal for us.”
