Forget the traditional 11-sided game of football that we all know and love – Residents of Ashbourne in Derbyshire took part in the annual Shrovetide football game, said to be the world’s oldest, largest, longest and maddest game of footy.
The game is played between the Up’ards and the Down’ards, those born north and south of the River Henmore which divides the town. The game has little to do with normal football, for it has few rules – anyone can join in and hands are allowed! We love these regional UK traditions – however, bonkers!
