Congratulations to Great Britain’s women’s team for winning gold at the European Cross Country Championships in Belgrade yesterday.
28 year old Gemma Steel won the individual silver medal after finishing four seconds behind France’s Sophie Duarte; an improvement on her bronze medal achieved in 2011. Steel’s strong performance came at the end of an impressive year for the Charnwood Athletic Club runner, during which she became only the ninth UK woman to run 10km in under 32 minutes. She ran Sunday’s 8km course in just 26 minutes 39 seconds.
Charlotte Purdue, 22, won bronze in the women’s under-23s, while Emelia Gorecka, 19, won individual gold in the last race of her junior career.
